For parents looking for the healthiest choice for their babies.

Why EU and Australian Brands are superior to U.S. Formulas.

Why it is essential to consider international formula standards when feeding your baby.

EU Baby Formula Superior to US varieties

We curate the best baby formulas in the world

We carefully curate our range of EU and Australian infant formula to offer you a selection of the world’s healthiest baby formula. The first question a lot of parents ask themselves in their formula decision journey is “Why are the EU and Australian infant formulas so much better than the US options?”.

The reasons are many and include out of date US infant formula regulations, poor organic farming standards and questionable ingredients.

Outdated FDA Formula regulations

The FDA’s regulations governing formula have not kept pace with modern science, leaving American families with products that often fall short compared to European and Australian options.

TheFDA’s nutrient requirements for infant formula haven’t undergone a comprehensive update in over 20 years.

Outdated nutrient standards risk under or over supplementation, affecting infant growth and neurodevelopment. The stricter more up to date regulations in the EU and Australia are regularly reviewed to ensure that they reflect modern science and incorporate the latest insights to support optimal neurodevelopment and healthy growth.

US Formula Industry Companies Exert Undue Regulatory Influence

The U.S. system often allows questionable ingredients and relies heavily on self-regulation, leaving parents to navigate a landscape shaped more by corporate influence than scientific consensus.

The EU and Australia have adopted a precautionary approach that prioritizes infant health over industry convenience.

The baby formula market in the US is extremely consolidated, with 4 companies controlling 97% of production. This market dominance has resulted in the industry successfully holding off the regulation and enforcement of minimum nutritional standards, clean label commitments and rules to limit false and misleading marketing claims. Basic regulations that have been in place in the EU and Australia for many years.

Differences between Organic Formula Standards in the US vs EU & Australia

EU and Australian organic standards for infant formula are stricter than U.S. standards, especially regarding synthetic additives, GMOs, and ingredient purity. Many formulas labeled “organic” in the U.S. would not qualify under EU or Australian rules.

The organic standards in the EU and Australia guarantee that the formula is free of hormones, GMOs, added sugars, artificial preservatives, antibiotics and pesticides.

HiPP and Holle meet even higher standards, such as Demeter and Biodynamic standards respectively.

Quality of Formula Ingredients

Food regulators in the EU and Australia proactively ban ingredients if there’s any uncertainty about safety, especially for infants. Whereas the US employs a more reactive model that allows ingredients until proven harmful, often relying on industry-submitted data, with such influence delaying reforms.

This is the reason that many common ingredients found in US formulas are banned in Australia and the EU, such as GMO’s, corn syrup, rice/glucose syrup, fructose, or table sugars.

DHA/ARA (Omega Fatty Acids) are an optional ingredient in US formula and mandatory in all EU and Australian formula. These essential fatty acids are crucial for infant development, particularly for brain, eye, and immune function.

US Formula Creates Sweet Taste Profile Preferences

Many US infant formulas lean heavily on added sugars, creating an unnaturally sweet taste profile. Early exposure to high-sugar formulas can reinforce hedonic hunger (pleasure-driven eating), reduce acceptance of bitter or savory foods like vegetables and increase obesity risk.

U.S. formulas often rely on corn syrup solids, sucrose, or glucose. These ingredients create an unnaturally sweet profile, far removed from breast milk’s natural flavor balance.

EU and Australian formulas follow stricter rules whereby sucrose is banned and lactose (the carbohydrate naturally found in breast milk) is the primary source of sweetness in infant formula.

Why is formula produced in EU and Australia of higher quality than US formula?

There are two main reasons for EU and Australian manufactured formula being healthier and safer for your baby.

1. Higher standards for formula ingredients

EU and Australia regularly update and constantly enforce formula ingredient regulation compliance to ensure the latest food tech standards for infant health and safety are met. The FDA has not reviewed and updated baby formula ingredient requirements since 1998.

Many common ingredients found in US formulas are banned in Australia and the EU, such as GMO’s, corn syrup, rice/glucose syrup, fructose, or table sugars.

Due to the high prevalence of heavy metal contamination of soil and water across the US, most US produced baby formula is found to have potentially harmful levels of contaminants, including heavy metals like lead and arsenic

2.      Higher and stricter qualification criteria to meet the organic certification standards

The farming standards required for organic certification are higher in the EU and Australia.

The organic standards in the EU and Australia guarantee that the formula is free of hormones, GMOs, added sugars, artificial preservatives, antibiotics and pesticides.

HiPP and Holle meet even higher standards, such as Demeter and Biodynamic standards respectively.

Table Summarizing the Differences between EU and US Baby Formula

Feature European Baby Formula US Baby Formula
Fat Source
Natural milk fats with minimal vegetable oils
All milk-based formulas generally remove milk fat and add vegetable oil
Carbohydrate Source
Lactose is the primary carbohydrate. At least 30% of the carbohydrates found in baby formula must come directly from lactose
No set minimums for carbohydrate source so many formulas contain corn syrup, glucose syrup solids, or other processed sweeteners as a primary carbohydrate source
Heavy Metals Regulation
(such as lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium)
The EU has strict heavy metal limits for baby formulas and food, continuously updated and monitored.
FDA action levels are higher than EU limits and testing is not mandatory.
Iron
Lower iron levels, closer to breast milk, focused on bioavailability
Generally higher iron levels without regard to absorption efficiency
I'm concerned about allergies, can I feed my baby the brands you carry?

Why are U.S. formulas sweeter than EU formulas?

The short answer is regulatory differences regarding carbohydrate sources.

In the European Union, regulations require that the primary carbohydrate in standard infant formula be lactose (the natural sugar found in breast milk). In the United States, the FDA allows manufacturers more flexibility to use other carbohydrate sources, such as corn syrup solids or sucrose (table sugar), which are often significantly sweeter than lactose.

The Breakdown: Ingredients & Sweetness Levels

The difference in taste largely comes down to the "sweetness index" of the carbohydrates used.

  • Lactose (Used in EU & some US): This is the gold standard for formula because it mimics breast milk. It has a very mild sweetness.Sweetness Index: 16 (Low)
  • Corn Syrup / Corn Syrup Solids (Common in US): Widely used in US "sensitive" or "gentle" formulas because it is cheap and easy to digest. It is sweeter than lactose.Sweetness Index: 23–40 (Moderate)
  • Sucrose (Allowed in US): This is standard table sugar. While less common than corn syrup, it is still permitted in US formulas. It is intensely sweet compared to lactose.Sweetness Index: 100 (High)

Why does the US use these sweeter ingredients?

  1. Cost & Shelf Life: Corn-based sugars are abundant, cheaper to source in the US, and can help stabilize the shelf life of the formula.
  2. "Sensitive" Formulas: Many US formulas are marketed as "Gentle" or "Sooth" for babies with fussiness. Manufacturers often replace lactose with corn syrup in these versions because it is easier for some babies to digest if they have a temporary sensitivity to lactose. In the EU, lactose is mandatory in most formulas unless there is a specific medical reason to remove it.
Do I have to move up the stages based on age?

Higher stages of formula contain the necessary proteins and iron levels an older baby may need.

We always advise parents to choose the formula that corresponds to your baby's age to ensure that they are getting all of the formula benefits.

It does not have to be exact to the day, you can wait until your current supply is finished before moving forward. This is normal and is fine for up to several weeks or even a month.

European formulas are designed in stages to align with a baby’s changing nutritional needs as they grow. The stages adjust levels of essential nutrients like iron, calcium, and vitamin D to support healthy development.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, EU formulas ensure babies receive the right balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates tailored to each stage of growth.

Stage PRE Infant Formula

Designed for infants from 0 to 6 months, it closely resembles Stage 1 formula in composition. Despite the stage name it is not intended for premature babies. The key distinction with Stage 1 is that Stage PRE does not contain starch, making it easier for newborns to digest. This ensures a gentle transition for infants while providing essential nutrients tailored to their early developmental needs.

Stage 1 Infant Formula

Designed to provide essential nutrition from birth, serving as either a breastfeeding supplement or full alternative.

This formula stage is carefully designed to support healthy growth and development, ensuring infants receive a gentle, well-tolerated source of essential nutrients. Some Stage 1 formulas may also contain starch or maltodextrin to enhance energy content, making it a nutritionally complete choice for early infancy.

Stage 2 Infant Formula

Designed for babies 6 months and older, providing enhanced iron levels, vitamin D and calcium to support physical growth and strengthen bones and muscles, which is crucial as babies develop their motor skills at this age.

Higher casein content makes it more filling than earlier stages, helping babies feel satisfied between feedings. With a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals, Stage 2 ensures continued healthy development while transitioning toward a more diverse diet that includes solids.

Stage 3 Follow On Formula

Designed for babies 10 months and older, it includes higher levels of iron, calcium, and vitamin D to support bone strength, muscle growth, and energy needs for active toddlers.

These formulas also contain Omega-3 (ALA) and Omega-6 fatty acids, crucial for brain, eye, and nervous system development. While most brands categorize Stage 3 for 10+ months, some variations exist where it is 12+ months.

Stage 4 Toddler Formula

For children 12 months and older, providing advanced nutrition beyond earlier stages. It provides higher levels of iron, calcium, and vitamin D, essential for bone strength, muscle function, and sustained energy as toddlers become more active.

This formula also includes Omega-3 (ALA) and Omega-6 fatty acids, which play a crucial role in brain, eye, and nervous system development. While most brands introduce Stage 4 at 12+ months, some variations exist where it is 24+ months.
