Quick Answer
HiPP HA and HiPP Dutch are both cow milk formulas made with lactose, GOS prebiotic fiber, the natural L. fermentum culture and DHA. The difference is the protein. HiPP HA uses whey protein that has been hydrolyzed (broken into small pieces) and ultrafiltered, and it is made for babies at higher risk of allergies, such as babies with a parent or sibling who has allergies. HiPP Dutch uses intact organic milk protein and is the everyday choice for most babies. HiPP HA is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA)

What Is the Difference Between HiPP HA and HiPP Dutch Combiotic?
The two formulas share the same base, lactose as the carbohydrate, GOS prebiotic fiber, the L. fermentum culture first found in breast milk, and DHA. Neither contains starch or maltodextrin.
The key difference is how the milk protein is prepared. In both HiPP Dutch and HA the protein is from organic skimmed milk and whey. However in the HA, the whey protein is broken down into much smaller pieces and then ultrafiltered. Smaller protein pieces are less likely to be recognized by a baby's immune system, and are easier to digest, which is why HA is specially made for babies who have allergies or sensitive tummies.

Is HiPP HA Extensively Hydrolyzed?
HiPP HA is an extensively hydrolyzed formula designed to lower the risk of allergy in babies. It is not designed for babies who already have cow's milk protein allergy. A baby with a diagnosed or suspected CMPA usually needs a formula chosen by their doctor. For more on how hydrolyzed formula works, read our guide to HA (hydrolyzed) formula.
Who Should Use HiPP HA?
- Babies with a family history of allergies. If a parent or sibling has allergies, eczema or asthma, your pediatrician may suggest an HA formula when breast milk is not an option.
- Not babies with CMPA. If your baby has blood in the stool, hives, swelling, vomiting after feeds or poor weight gain, see your pediatrician before choosing any formula.
- Most other babies do well on standard HiPP Combiotic.

HiPP Dutch HA vs German HA
HiPP Dutch HA launched in 2023 and is the first hydrolyzed formula in HiPP's Dutch range. Dutch HA Stage 1 follows the long-established German HA Stage 1, with two main differences, no starch and more protein, at 1.8g per 100 ml compared with 1.3g in the German version. Dutch HA comes in an 800g can, while German HA comes in 600g boxes. The German HA PRE is also for 0-6 months and is the no starch version in the German range. Both are made in Germany. Which HiPP HA Stage Should You Choose?
- Dutch HA Stage 1: from birth to 6 months.
- Dutch HA Stage 2: from 6 months.
- German HA PRE and HA Stage 1: both suitable from birth.
- German HA Stage 2: from 6 months.

Switching Between HiPP Combiotic and HiPP HA
Both formulas use the same scoop ratio, one unpacked scoop to one ounce of water. Hydrolyzed formula can taste and smell different from standard formula, so some babies need a few days to get used to it. Ask your pediatrician before you switch, and before you move a baby on HA back to a standard formula.
